I Must Confess, I Often Carry A Machete When I Should Be Carrying Water Jars...

01-29-2014

"The task of the modern educator is not to cut down jungles, but to irrigate deserts." - C.S. Lewis

In the earliest act of creation, the Bible tells us that God separated earth from the heavens, and that “the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.” (Gen 1:2 NKJV)  God saw that life needed water for continued growth and health.  Without it, living things wither and die.  The same is true of our spiritual life and growth.  Without the life giving power of God’s flowing Spirit pouring into and nourishing us, our spiritual landscape becomes dry and cracked; unable to be fertile soil in which seeds of life can take deep root and grow.  When that happens, we wither and die.
As disciples nourished by and enlivened in the presence of the Spirit, we are then called to go and baptize and teach what we have been taught.  (Matt 28: 19-20)  We are called to irrigate.

In a culture that is thirsting for more... in a society that is increasingly dehydrated because of an attempt to dam up the flow of living water by endeavoring to silence the voice of God’s people in public squares so others’ don’t have to be faced with “judgmental” proclamation that sin exists… we as Christians should understand the necessity of being called to bring the fount of life to the world.  For it is only when we find the way to bring that water into peoples’ parched and dry souls that life begins to spring up anew within their hearts.  It is our job to begin to dig.

It isn’t an easy task.  But it is a task that the Christ found so important that He carved a furrow all the way to the top of a hill called Golgotha by dragging a Roman cross WE deserved to carry. Our salvation grows from that irrigative work; allowing the living waters to flow over, around and through us...  nourishing us into eternal life.

I'm always glad to hear from people who have taken time to read the posts here... even those who may not agree with me. I have had to make changes in the way I handle comments for this blog. They will all be subject to moderation from here on in. And as this is a personal blog and I have sole responsibility for its upkeep, it may take me a while to clear a post. I only ask 2 things from those who would leave comments.

1.) Please give your name. I have posted under mine, not anonymously or with a user name that would hide my identity. I would hope if someone was going to share an opinion, thought, criticism, or atta boy, that they would do so without fear of being identified so we can have an open dialogue.

2.) Please be respectful in the use of your language. Any cuss words, slurs, or other specifically vitriolic language will result in your comments not being posted. This is simply an attempt to keep a civil and life affirming tone for this space.

Thanks! And remember... Great minds discuss ideas. Average minds discuss things. But small minds talk about people. Let's try to be great together.
